Welcome to Caterpillar Class! Caterpillar class is one of the Year 2 classes at the Isle of Ely Primary School. From this page you will be able to read about our curriculum and learning activities. Children have PE on Tuesday and Friday and will need to arrive in their PE kits on this day. We will also provide a weekly newsflash to show what we have been learning in the past week.

Our curriculum
In Caterpillar Class this half term, we will be learning:

Content |
English |
In English this half term, we will begin by focusing on our senses in a piece of poetry. Next we will focus on describing settings within our writing. We will once again we using the Talk4Writing approach, beginning with our cold write, before moving through the innovation and independent stages. Our model text this half term is The Snow Queen which will provide us with a high-quality example. We will be working on consistently using on our non-negotiables of full stops and capital letters. Furthermore, to improve the content of our writing, we will be using tools such as adjectives, verbs, similes. During this half term, we will be reading Gorilla by Anthony Browne. We will be developing our reading fluency and intonation, as well as all of the VIPERS skills (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Evidence, Retrieval and Summarise). |
Maths |
In maths, we will be focusing on two areas of learning. The first is ‘Numbers to 100’. During this unit, we will be reviewing and strengthening place value knowledge, as well as sequencing, reasoning and problem solving. The second is 'Addition and subtraction'. In this unit, we will practice using concrete, abstract and written methods to add and subtract. |
Science |
In science will be learning about the human body. We will cover our skeleton and muscles, digestion and healthy eating, circulation and taking care of our bodies. |
History |
In history we will be investigating the Ancient Egyptians. We will consider why the River Nile was so important to their civilisation and look at keys figures including Tutankhamun and Howard Carter. We will also learn about pyramids, mummification and hieroglyphics. |
Religious Education |
In R.E. this half term, we will be learning about Judaism. We will find out about Synagogues and what Jewish families do to celebrate Shabbat. |
Music |
In music, the theme for this half term is Orchestra’s. During this unit the children will develop their understanding of dynamics, timbre, sound and tempo. The children will hear music from traditional tales such as ‘The Three Little Pigs’. |
Physical Education |
During P.E. this half term, the children will be focusing on two areas: ball skills and fundamental skills. In both areas, the children will be building on their skills from previous years as well as developing and applying new skills. |
Computing |
In computing, the children will learning about what a computer is and recognising different forms of technology. |
Art |
In art, we will be developing our knowledge about primary and secondary colours. We will be focussing on the artwork of Van Gough and how he used primary and secondary colours to create his famous paintings. |
Personal, Social and Health Education |
In P.S.H.E., children will be learning about rights, rules and responsibilities. We will look at what responsibilities we have and how they change as we grow older. |

Newsflash!
Week Commencing 11th September 2023
It has been a busy week as usual in Year 2. We finished writing our own version of the poem, First Dog on the Moon. The children enjoyed thinking creatively about the different things they would be able to sense if they were on the moon. In maths, the children explored partitioning numbers in different ways, using concrete equipment as well as written methods. In history, we learnt more about life in Ancient Egypt! Well done for all of your hard work this week Year 2.

Hello to all parents and carers children of Year 2!
It has been a fantastic start to the school year. The children spent the first part of the week getting to know their new environments and establishing routines. There was also lots of new learning going on across all subjects including where Egypt is located and the importance of the River Nile to the Ancient Egyptians. All of the Year 2 team are so proud of how resilient the children have been coming back to school after the long summer break. Well done Caterpillars and Spiders!
