Our Curriculum

This half term we will be learning:

English

In English this half term will be starting by exploring Kennings poetry.  The children will be learning and innovating an example of this style before creating their own independent version.  Our first fiction unit will be based on The Canal which is a warning story. The children will be using the Talk for Writing approach to learn the model text through actions. They will be exploring how to use expanded noun phases, the use of 'power of three', how to describe the weather for setting and the use of prepositional phases on their writing. Towards the end of the half term the children will look at the model text, Kingston Frost Dragon, which is an information text.

Maths

In maths this half term we will be looking at 4-digit numbers in place value. In our first unit of place value, we will be exploring how to round to the nearest 10 and 100, counting in 1,000s, representing 4-digit numbers and looking at numbers up to 10,000 on a number line. Moving into the second unit of place value, we will be exploring finding 1,000 more and less of a number, comparing and ordering 4-digit numbers, counting in 25s and begin to look at negative numbers.

Science

In science this half term is based around our human body. We will be looking into the building blocks of the human body, our teeth and their functions, how our food is digested, what a healthy diet consists of and the importance of vitamins and minerals.

History

In history this half term we will be learning about life in Ancient Rome. The children will explore the origins of Rome and understand some of the geographical factors that led to Rome being powerful. Then we will learn about how significant Pompeii was in Roman history discussing the historical evidence that remains to this day.

Geography

In geography, our focus is 'Spatial Sense' with an emphasis on location. We begin our unit by learning how to use an atlas. Then we will be looking at the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, how to use a scale on a map, what a grid reference is used for, our local area now and how it has changed over time.

P.E.

In PE we will be exploring a range of different balls skills in one of our lessons and then learning skills based around Tag Rugby in our second. These will be on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Religious Education

In R.E., our focus this half term is on religious texts and moral codes.  The children will be exploring how texts from different religions relate to the traditions specific to that faith and how they are central to the teaching of almost all religions.  They will also look at a few examples of religious teachings and learn about the impact they have on people’s daily lives.

Spanish

In Spanish this half term we will revisit some of the core language we have learned in our first year of learning (asking and answering their name, where they live, greetings, days of the week, months of the year, classroom instructions, numbers and age). We will also learn the rooms in a school and the objects that can be found in a classroom.

Personal, Social and Health Education

In P.S.H.E., this half term, we will be learning about rights, rules and responsibilities. We will explore the idea of respect and apply this to our school life. We will also discuss class rules and the importance of them in keeping us safe.

Art

Our art we will be exploring different elements of art: colour, line and texture. We will be expanding our knowledge of tertiary colours, practising creating tone by using stippling, understanding what contour and descriptive lines and by using our knowledge creating a detailed image of an animal.

Design and Technology

In D&T we will be looking at the electrical systems in torches.  The children will be building on their existing knowledge of everyday objects that a powered in different ways, including batteries and electricity, as well as using their understanding of electrical conductors and insulators to help them when designing their own product.

Music

In music we will be exploring changes in pitch, dynamics and tempo based on the subject of ‘rivers’.  The children will be learning to describe how music makes them feel using technical vocabulary as well as creating and performing ostinatos in small groups.

Computing

In computing the children will understand the need to be thoughtful when working on a collaborative document, use comments to suggest changes to a document and understand how to resolve comments, plan a survey with a range of different questions types that will provide different types of answers. Then they will export data to a spreadsheet, highlighting data, using conditional formatting and calculating averages and sums of numbers.

Knowledge Organisers

At the Isle of Ely Primary School, we use knowledge organisers as a tool to help our children learn more and remember more and to allow parents and carers to support their children's learning. In our knowledge organisers, you will find essential knowledge, key dates, important vocabulary and key figures. The knowledge organisers can also be used as a fun assessment tool which will help children to see the progress they have made.

Weekly Newsflash w/c 11.09.23

The first full week back has definitely been busy.  Both classes have been working on their team work and listening skills during lessons as well as outside at playtimes and lunchtimes.  In maths we have been continuing to explore place value, focussing this week on partitioning numbers in different ways.  The children are definitely becoming more confident at using images and resources to help their explanations.  In English, we have begun our first fiction unit, based on a short warning story called The Canal.  The children have been text mapping and learning this model which will support their innovation work next week.  In art, we have extended our understanding of how to create tints, shades and tones by using the 'stippling' technique whilst in geography the children learnt how to find the Tropics of Cancer, Capricorn and lines of latitude and longitude in an atlas.

Weekly Newsflash w/c 04.09.23

Welcome back to a new year!  It has been fantastic to see the children in both classes settling in so well and all of the adults in Year 4 have enjoyed getting to them more over the last few days.  This week, as well as settling in to the routines of their new class, the children have been discussing the importance of our school values and rules.  In maths we have been revising our understanding of place value in four digit numbers and how this links to rounding numbers.  We have started English this term by exploring Kennings style poetry, innovating a model version and creating our own.  In history the children have begun learning about Ancient Rome, its origin and how the location of the city of Rome helped the empire grow in size and power.  We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing the children back on Monday.
